Pollutants in ambient air have been monitored for several decades throughout Germany by hundreds of monitoring sites operated at federal level and by the Laender.
The Federal Environment Agency has charted the development in air pollution for sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (PM10 since 2000) since 1985, and since 1990 for ozone and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). The maps illustrate the overall dispersion of air pollution throughout Germany. The interpolation method applied does not allow for small-scale interpretation of the maps.
