Aerial view oft he new UBA building in Dessau-Roßlau © Firma BusseThe architecturally unique headquarters of the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) are located at an historic site in Dessau-Roßlau, the former „Gas Quarter”. UBA relocated its main offices from Berlin to Dessau-Roßlau in 2005, where it employs a staff of about 900.
The use of renewable energies has been taken up in UBA's overall energy concept. There is a photovoltaic unit installed in the folding roof over the entrance lobby (Forum). The solar collectors on the Forum flat roof are part of the solar-power assisted cooling system of the building, which mainly cool the auditorium and the IT areas. Thanks to what is currently the world's largest geothermal heat exchanger with a tube length of more than 5 km, outside air is sucked in and pre-conditioned underground to cool or, depending on the season, provide additional heat to offices.
